One of the main reasons I made my recent trip to Arizona and Utah was to see Horseshoe Bend. I’ve seen it in photographs for years but actually seeing it in person is a totally different experience. It is so much bigger than I had imagined.
From the top edge of the canyon it is 1000 feet down to the Colorado River below. And they don’t have any guard rails or anything to keep people from falling off the edge. You can walk right up to the edge and stick your head over and have a look if you want. Just make sure you have solid footing before you do that!
It is located in Northern Arizona, about five miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about four miles southwest of Page, AZ. That entire area is awesome to see in person with so many places to go explore any direction you go from there. Monument Valley in one direction, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in another, and The Grand Canyon in another. I would like to go back some time when I can spend a lot more time really exploring everything.
